This year we have decided to support the Male Cancer Awareness Campaign. We have been inspired by Joe Middleton, from our solicitors Lightfoots, who will be swimming the English Channel… and back again, along with a team of three others. Well, if Joe can do that, the least we can do is put our hand in our pocket to support such a worthy cause. You can follow Joe’s progress through his very entertaining blog.

Here is a summary of the charity’s aims:

We aim to educate men and their partners the importance of early detection and we hope to build a culture where embarrassment does not prevent them from addressing problems with intimate parts of their bodies.

We were delighted with RWM 2012. As usual it was a great show full of visitors who really care about the waste management industry and the important role it plays. We were exceptionally busy and met with people from diverse businesses; from those just looking for a simple software system for their skip operation, to large national organisations looking for an advanced waste management software solution. So thank you to all those who visited our stand – if you didn’t make it, please get in touch and we’ll be delighted to fix up a demonstration – or you can get a quick overview of our products here.

This year was particularly important to us as we are celebrating 25 years of creating waste management software. We wanted to mark this rather exciting event with something special so we ran a competition at the show called Track-the-Truck, with plenty of prizes including a fantastic 50″ TV. The lucky winner of the first prize was David Tucker, Area Support Officer of Monmouthshire County Council.

We are now planning our attendance at RWM 2013 – it’s already shaping up to being an unmissable event with headline speaker, Lord Robert Winston. See you there…

It’s incredible to think that it was way back in 1987 that we first started our journey into the waste management industry. Compared to our latest software solutions, ‘DUMP’ (our very first product) looks almost primitive, but it’s easy to forget just how advanced it was at the time.

It is this culture of constant development that has led to the latest, feature rich version of Integrated Waste Management (IWS), packed with functionality that was unimaginable 25 years ago. As far as we are concerned, if you are standing still you are actually going backwards. We have seen huge progress in the waste management industry, from the large nationals down to local skip, scrap and container operations, our software systems have to keep pace with the constant change we see in the market and, sometimes, take the lead. There are no signs of the pace of change slowing, in-fact it’s accelerating; driven largely by environmental and recycling issues along with persistent changes in legislation (which, uniquely, we guarantee our software systems against).

So, we’re certainly not taking our foot off the gas – far from it – but we thought it would be fun in our anniversary year to take an unusual look at some of the facts and figures that make up P&L’s history. For example, we have installed our software in 20 countries and, in just the last couple of years, have saved waste management companies £1.3M in postage as our systems allow them to move to email invoicing. You’ll be seeing the facts pop-up in our advertising as we lead-up to RWM 2012, but for a sneaky preview you can take a look below.

If you would like to know more about P&L you can watch our video here.

For better or worse (and there are good arguments on both sides), the fact of the matter is that working is no longer confined to the office. Answering emails on your smartphone whilst waiting for a train or researching that ‘next big deal’ over a coffee in Starbucks (another contentious 21st century phenomena), we all find ourselves doing it.

Leaving the life-work balance issues to one side, there are undoubtedly benefits to being connected to the latest information when and where it suits you, and this is especially true in a 24/7 industry like waste management. Our latest product – IWS-portal – lets you do just that. Access the latest IWS data and reports ‘live’ from any web enabled device.

But why stop there? If you see the benefits of ‘information on demand’ your customers will too. By giving them the ability to access their data from your systems, you will not only improve customer service, but also reduce customer queries to you and your team. The customer answers their own question with minimal fuss and you didn’t have to lift a finger.

Well, IWS-portal lets you do that too and therefore offers a great opportunity for our IWS6 customers to further streamline their operations.

So now you can always keep your finger on the pulse of your waste management operation, even if it is so over a skinny latte or from the comfort of the 19th hole!

Joe Barnes, our Sales Exectutive, was recently interviewed by Scrap-ex for their ‘My Business’ feature. As the interview captures nicely everything we do and are about, we thought it would be a useful article for anyone new to P&L to read, so here it is…

Scrap-ex: Describe your business to me
Joe: P&L are market leaders in the development of software systems for the waste management industry. We only create systems for this sector, we don’t ‘adapt’ software to suit. They are written from the ground up, by a team of experts who know more about waste management than is healthy for a bunch of techies!

Scrap-ex: Tell me about your product range
Joe: IWS6 is our showcase product. It is the cream of waste management systems and is fully loaded with modules to cope with just about anything a waste management company can throw at it. Scheduling, weighbridges, hazardous waste, invoicing, reporting – it handles everything!

IWS-mobile takes IWS out on the road. It plans the route (avoiding any low bridges or course!), captures signatures and data, tracks each vehicle in real time – the list goes on but I’ll stop there.

Skip2+ includes many of the powerful features found in IWS6 but is more affordable for small businesses. It can easily be upgraded to IWS6 when the customer is ready.

Scrap-ex: What is your most successful product?
Joe: We have done thousands of installs for IWS, so it has to be that. At the moment we are also getting a lot of feedback from customers raving about the way IWS-mobile has transformed their operations. I think it’s because of the desire to cut costs – we run through a calculation with them and, in almost all cases, IWS-mobile pays for itself within six months and then goes on to save the business thousands.

Scrap-ex: How long has your company been in business?
Joe: It’s a big year for P&L as we turn 25. Our celebrations are being overshadowed a bit by another big anniversary, but watch out for us at RWM where we will be having a bit of a bash to celebrate.

Scrap-ex: Where are you based and what area do you serve?
Joe: Our head office is near Oxford but we have a global customer base from Aberdeen to Australia!

Scrap-ex: Who are your typical customers?
Joe: There is nothing typical about our customers. We work with big multinationals where our systems handle absurd amounts of waste each day, through to small, local companies looking to streamline their operations and cut costs. We even count one of the big oil companies as a customer; they use IWS6 to manage their waste by-products.

Scrap-ex: What would you say is the best thing about your business?
Joe: Without a doubt, it’s the way we go the extra mile for our customers (I was trying not to use any clichés, but it’s true!). For example, we offer 24hr technical support because if something is not working at the start of a 5am shift you need it fixing then, not in four hours time. But we often get calls from distressed customers at ungodly hours with problems that turnout to be nothing to do with our software. Their IT department are still in the land of nod, so we will do everything we can to sort it out for them. Some would say “it’s not our problem” but if we can help we always will.
